Hierarchical accretion
WebThe hierarchical formation scenario for the stellar halo requires the accretion and disruption of dwarf galax-ies, yet low-metallicity halo stars are enriched inα-elements compared to similar, low-metallicity stars in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. We address this primary challenge for the hierarchical formation scenario WebThe entropy distribution of the intracluster medium and the shape of its confining potential well completely determine the X-ray properties of a relaxed cluster of galaxies, motivating us to explore the origin of intracluster entropy and to …

WebWe use deep surface photometry of the giant elliptical M49 (NGC 4472), obtained as part of our survey for diffuse light in the Virgo Cluster, to study the stellar populations in its outer halo. Our data trace M49's stellar halo out to ~100 kpc (7r e ), where we find that the shallow color gradient seen in the inner regions becomes dramatically steeper.
